My Favorite Brushes and the Sunday Studio Routine
A clay brush holder, three cups of water in different states of cloudy pink, and a Sunday ritual that gets my whole week of painting started right.
My clay brush holder is shaped like a smiling sun, and every round brush inside it has a nickname. Sunday mornings start with rinsing them all in warm water before anything else touches the easel.
I like keeping three cups going at once: one for cleaning, one for pale tints, and one that's allowed to get as murky as it wants because that's where the moody grays and browns live.
By the time the water in all three cups has turned a soft, tinted pink, I know it's been a good painting session.
